Google Ads Campaign for Toyota 4Runner Inventory

IndustryCar dealerships
PlatformsGoogle
Suggested Budget$75–$150/day total for a single-rooftop dealer in a mid-size market; competitive metro markets (LA, Dallas, Atlanta) may need $150–$250/day to maintain meaningful impression share on 4Runner terms
Time To Results2–4 weeks to stabilize CPL and gather enough data to make bid decisions; 6–8 weeks before you can reliably judge whether a keyword or ad variant is worth keeping
Demand Typesearch-heavy — 4Runner shoppers actively search model-specific terms (trim, price, inventory) weeks before visiting a dealer; intent is already formed.

The 30-second recipe

Start with
Google Search campaign targeting 4Runner-specific, high-intent keywords with call and lead form extensions
Add next
Google Vehicle Listing Ads (VLAs) via the Vehicle Feed in Google Merchant Center — add once Search is delivering at least 15 leads/month and your dealer feed is verified and pulling live inventory
Not yet
Performance Max — not until you have at least 30 recorded conversions and a clean vehicle feed; PMax without conversion history will burn budget on irrelevant placements, and without a feed it won't serve the inventory-specific formats that make it worthwhile for dealers
Wait for
Roughly 30–50 lead conversions (form fills + calls) tracked in Google Ads before expanding to VLAs or PMax; under that threshold the algorithm can't optimize and cost-per-lead will swing wildly
Measure
Cost per qualified lead (form fill or tracked call 60 sec+), lead-to-appointment rate (tracked offline or via CRM), and impression share lost to budget vs. lost to rank — those three tell you whether the problem is money, quality score, or bid

Read this first — every recipe, every time

This is a recipe, not a guarantee. How well any ad campaign performs depends on things no recipe can control: your budget, how crowded and expensive your industry's auctions are, the products you sell and what you charge for them, how well your website actually converts visitors, the quality of your customer support, your reviews and reputation, your creative, and plain timing. A perfect recipe on top of a weak offer or a broken website will still lose money — ads amplify what's already there, good or bad.

The budgets shown are suggestions only — yours could and should vary with your available funds and your goals. Follow this recipe with caution: make sure every step lines up with your budget and your business, and edit where necessary. We explain why each step exists, but nothing here is one-size-fits-all. Before you spend a dollar, be blunt with yourself about the list above — get your house in order, then use the recipe to learn and test. That's what it's for.

Check the rules that govern your industry before you run anything. Plenty of businesses carry advertising obligations that have nothing to do with the ad platforms: licensing boards, professional advertising standards, rules about what you may claim and how you must substantiate it, age restrictions, and consent laws covering email, texting, and calling. Those rules are yours to know, they vary by state and country, and they override any step in this recipe.

If you work in a licensed or regulated field — health and medical, legal, financial and lending, insurance, real estate, alcohol, firearms, cannabis, childcare, education, anything with a board or a license behind it — confirm what applies to you before you spend a dollar, and ask your attorney or your licensing body if you are not certain. Nothing on this site is legal advice.

This recipe runs entirely on Google — starting with a Search campaign to intercept buyers already typing 4Runner-specific queries, then layering in Vehicle Listing Ads (VLAs) once your Vehicle Feed is verified. Google is the right call here because 4Runner shoppers are active, high-intent researchers; they’re comparing trim levels, looking up MSRP vs. dealer price, and reading off-road reviews before they ever walk into a dealership. Meta and other discovery platforms can reach 4Runner-adjacent audiences but deserve their own separate recipe. Build Search first, then VLAs once you have 30+ conversions or confirmed feed delivery.

This is for franchised Toyota dealers (or authorized independent dealers) who already have a Google Ads account, basic conversion tracking, and a live inventory page — and want one well-structured evergreen campaign for their 4Runner stock, not a full-account overhaul. The core challenge: 4Runner has a passionate, loyal buyer base, but the buying cycle is long (weeks to months), the purchase price sits between $40K–$58K MSRP for new and $28K–$50K for used, and you’re competing in Google auctions against every other Toyota dealer within 50–100 miles plus TrueCar, CarGurus, and Cars.com. Generic automotive ads get ignored; 4Runner-specific creative and keyword discipline is what cuts through.

What can you afford to pay for a customer?

Advertising can only cost what's left after everything else. Put in what a typical order looks like and this works out the rest.

These are your numbers as you've typed them. Connect your store and we'll work this out from your actual orders instead — including the costs most people forget.

Prerequisites Checklist

The technical setup

Before launching, confirm every item below is in place. Missing any one of these will make the campaign data unreliable or the ads unsurfaceable.

  • Google Ads account — active, billing confirmed, no policy holds.
  • Conversion tracking — at minimum: phone call conversions (Google forwarding number or call tracking provider), and a lead form "thank you" page goal. Import from GA4 or use Google Ads tags directly. Confirm conversions are firing in the diagnostic tool before launch.
  • Dealer website with 4Runner-specific landing page — a filtered inventory page showing only 4Runner stock (new and/or used), not the generic homepage. Page must load in under 3 seconds on mobile. This is the single biggest variable in your cost per lead; a slow or generic landing page will tank Quality Scores and conversion rate regardless of how good the ads are.
  • Google Business Profile verified — required for location extensions and call extensions to populate correctly.
  • Authorized Toyota dealer status confirmed — Google and Toyota both have trademark policies. As an authorized dealer you may use "Toyota" and "4Runner" in ad text and keywords, but you must not imply you are Toyota corporate. Do not use phrases like "Official Toyota Site" or "Toyota Headquarters." Non-authorized resellers face keyword and ad-text restrictions — verify your status with your Toyota DSM before launch.
  • Dealer advertising obligations — automotive advertising is regulated at the state level (dealer licensing boards, FTC used-car rules, state AG advertising standards). Confirm your advertised prices, fees, and financing disclosures comply with your state's dealer advertising rules and any Toyota dealer agreement requirements before running any price or payment claims in ad copy.

If you don't yet have conversion tracking or a dealer website, start with a from-scratch Google Ads recipe for car dealerships first.

In plain English

Make sure your Google Ads account is live, your phone calls and form fills are being tracked as conversions, and you have a landing page that shows only 4Runner inventory — not your whole lot. Confirm you're an authorized Toyota dealer before using the brand name in ads. Check that your state's dealer advertising rules are satisfied before putting any price or payment in copy.

New to "funnel" talk? What top, middle, and bottom mean

Think of every person who could ever buy from you as water moving through a funnel. Top of funnel is strangers — people who've never heard of the business. Campaigns here buy attention and first visits, not sales, so expect cheap clicks and few purchases. Middle of funnel is people who've shown interest — they visited, engaged, or are comparing options. Campaigns here re-engage and build the case. Bottom of funnel is people ready to buy right now — searching for exactly what you sell or abandoning a cart. Campaigns here convert; the clicks cost the most because the intent is worth the most. Full funnel means automated campaigns that work every stage at once. One thing that surprises people: recipes usually start at the bottom — capture the demand that already exists before spending money creating new demand at the top.

2

4Runner Search — Intent Capture

The technical setup

This is the core campaign and the reason this recipe exists. 4Runner buyers are searchers — they type specific queries like "2024 4Runner TRD Pro price" or "used 4Runner SR5 near me" weeks before they visit a store. Catching them at that moment, with an ad that reflects exactly what they typed, is the highest-leverage thing you can do in Google Ads for this vehicle. This campaign stays evergreen because 4Runner demand is consistent year-round (with a mild uptick in spring and pre-model-year changeover in late summer). Run phrase and exact match only — broad match on 4Runner terms will drag in Tacoma, Tundra, and random SUV queries and waste significant budget. Set bids manually or use Maximize Conversions with a target CPA once you have 30+ conversions recorded.

Ad copy rules for authorized dealers: You may use "Toyota 4Runner" in headlines and URLs. Do not use registered trademark symbols (™/®) — Toyota's policy handles that. Do not claim you are "the official" dealer or imply manufacturer endorsement. Do include your city/region and a differentiator (price match, large selection, quick trade appraisal).

Honest tradeoff: Your CPL on 4Runner search terms will be heavily influenced by your website's conversion rate and your offer (price transparency, trade value, financing). The ads get people to click; the landing page and your sales process close the lead. If CPL is high, check landing page speed and form friction before raising bids.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

BOTTOM OF FUNNEL
Campaign setup Google — Search campaign

Captures shoppers already searching 4Runner by name or trim — they're in active purchase mode and comparing dealers right now.

  1. 1. In Google Ads, click + New Campaign → objective: Leads → campaign type: Search → click Continue.
  2. 2. Campaign name: '4Runner | Search | [Your City] | Leads'. Uncheck Search Network partners and Display Network — Search only.
  3. 3. Locations: set to your dealership's city plus a radius of 30–60 miles (adjust to your actual market). Exclude locations you do not serve. Do NOT run nationally.
  4. 4. Languages: English (add Spanish if your market warrants it).
  5. 5. Bidding: start with Maximize Conversions (no target CPA). Switch to Target CPA after 30 confirmed conversions. Set a daily budget of $75–$120 for a single-market dealer.
  6. 6. Ad extensions — add all of the following: Call extension (use Google forwarding number for call tracking), Location extension (linked to your Google Business Profile), Sitelink extensions (links to: New 4Runner Inventory, Used 4Runner Inventory, Schedule a Test Drive, Get a Trade-In Value), Lead form extension if your site form is weak or slow.
  7. 7. Create one Ad Group: '4Runner — General Intent'. Add keywords below using phrase and exact match only — no bare broad match terms. Add all negatives listed below at the campaign level.
  8. 8. Write 3–5 responsive search ads (RSAs). Pin Headline 1 to your dealership name or city. Use headlines like: 'Toyota 4Runner Dealer — [City]', '2024 4Runner TRD Pro In Stock', 'New & Used 4Runner Inventory', 'Get Your 4Runner Trade-In Value', 'View 4Runner Pricing & Availability'. Descriptions: lead with inventory availability and a specific call to action ('Browse our 4Runner inventory online — no-hassle pricing. Call or schedule a test drive today.').
  9. 9. Set final URL to your 4Runner-specific filtered inventory page — not the homepage. Enable auto-generated assets only if you've reviewed what Google produces; turn off if it generates misleading claims.
  10. 10. Under More Settings → Ad rotation: set to 'Optimize' (Google favors best-performing combinations). Enable conversion tracking confirmation before saving — do not launch without it.
Starter keywords — copy, localize, and prune to fit
"toyota 4runner for sale" "toyota 4runner dealer" "4runner for sale near me" "new toyota 4runner" "used toyota 4runner" "toyota 4runner trd pro" "toyota 4runner trd off-road" "4runner sr5 for sale" "toyota 4runner price" "4runner msrp" "toyota 4runner inventory" [toyota 4runner dealer near me] [new 4runner for sale] [used 4runner for sale] [toyota 4runner trd pro price] [4runner trd off-road for sale] [toyota 4runner lease] [toyota 4runner financing] [4runner sr5 near me] [toyota 4runner 2024]
Starter negative keywords
free rental review youtube forum reddit reliability mpg towing capacity cargo space how to diy specs only off-road tips comparison vs 4runner manual parts floor mats accessories
In plain English

This campaign sits right at the bottom of the funnel — you're showing ads to people who are already searching for a 4Runner by name. They know what they want; your job is to be the most relevant result and make it easy to contact you. Use only phrase and exact match keywords so you're not burning money on people searching for Tacomas or generic SUVs.

3

Vehicle Listing Ads — Inventory Feed

The technical setup

Vehicle Listing Ads (VLAs) are Google's purpose-built format for dealerships. They pull directly from your vehicle inventory feed and show a photo, year/make/model/trim, price, mileage (for used), and your dealership name — right at the top of search results, before organic listings and often before standard text ads. For 4Runner searches, a VLA showing an actual photo of a specific 4Runner on your lot at a real price is significantly more compelling than a text ad. This campaign layer exists because it converts searchers who are close to a decision and want to see actual available inventory, not a generic ad. Prerequisite: your dealer website platform (DealerSocket, VinSolutions, Dealer.com, etc.) must have a Google-compliant vehicle feed flowing into Google Merchant Center. This is a technical setup step that may require your website provider or a feed management vendor — budget a week or two for feed verification before launching this phase.

Note on authorization: As an authorized Toyota dealer, your feed will contain Toyota VINs — this is fully permitted. Google does not require additional trademark authorization for VLA feeds tied to authorized dealer inventory.

Honest tradeoff: VLA performance is directly tied to your feed quality (accurate prices, real photos, updated availability) and your pricing competitiveness. If your 4Runner is priced 8% above market, shoppers will click, see the price, and bounce. The ads will show the data; the data has to be good.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

BOTTOM OF FUNNEL
Campaign setup Google — Vehicle ads campaign

Shows real in-stock 4Runner inventory to searchers in active shopping mode — these are people ready to see a specific vehicle and price, not just browse.

  1. 1. Confirm your vehicle inventory feed is live and verified in Google Merchant Center (Merchant Center → Products → Diagnostics — zero feed errors for vehicle listings). If the feed isn't set up, work with your dealer website provider before proceeding.
  2. 2. In Google Ads, click + New Campaign → objective: Leads → campaign type: select 'Vehicle ads' → link your Google Merchant Center account when prompted.
  3. 3. Campaign name: '4Runner | Vehicle Listing Ads | [City]'.
  4. 4. Locations: same radius as your Search campaign (city + 30–60 mile radius). Do not run nationally.
  5. 5. Budget: $30–$50/day dedicated to this campaign, separate from your Search budget. VLAs typically run a lower CPC than Search but volume depends on feed quality.
  6. 6. Bidding: start with Maximize Clicks to gather impression and click data for the first 2–3 weeks. Switch to Maximize Conversions once you have 15+ lead conversions from this campaign.
  7. 7. In the Vehicle group settings, filter to show only 4Runner inventory: set vehicle make = Toyota, model = 4Runner. Do not run all-inventory VLAs — keep this campaign 4Runner-specific to maintain relevance scores and budget control.
  8. 8. Add the same call extension and location extension as the Search campaign.
  9. 9. Set final URL at the vehicle-group level to your 4Runner inventory landing page. Individual VIN-level URLs will pull from the feed — confirm your feed's landing page URLs resolve correctly and load fast on mobile.
  10. 10. Monitor the Search Terms report weekly — VLAs can surface on broader queries than expected. Add negative keywords (jobs, parts, accessories, forums) at the campaign level.
In plain English

Vehicle Listing Ads show a photo, trim, and price of an actual 4Runner on your lot directly in search results. Shoppers see exactly what you have before they click — which means higher-quality clicks but also more price transparency. Get your inventory feed set up in Google Merchant Center first, then run this alongside your Search campaign.

4

Audience Signals and Bid Adjustments

The technical setup

This phase does not add a new campaign — it adds intelligence to the two campaigns already running. Google Ads lets you layer audience observations on Search and VLA campaigns without restricting who sees your ads. This matters for 4Runner because the buyer profile is specific: buyers skew 30–55, household income top 30%, frequently interested in overlanding, off-road driving, outdoor recreation, or truck/SUV culture. They often cross-shop with Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Lexus GX. Adding these as observation audiences lets you see whether certain segments convert at higher rates and apply bid adjustments accordingly — without cutting off anyone outside the segment.

Additionally, apply device bid adjustments. 4Runner researchers often start on desktop (reading reviews, comparing trims) but submit leads on mobile. Check your Search campaign's device report after 3 weeks — if desktop converts at a lower rate, reduce desktop bids by 15–20%; if mobile calls are your best leads, increase mobile bids by 10–15%.

Seasonality: 4Runner demand is relatively flat year-round compared to most vehicles, but you'll see mild spikes in March–May (spring driving season) and August–September (model year changeover when dealers push outgoing-year inventory). Plan bid increases of 15–20% during these windows and update ad copy to reflect new model year or clearance messaging.

In plain English

Layer audience data onto your existing campaigns to learn who's actually converting — you're not narrowing your reach, just watching. Over time, you'll find that certain audience types (outdoor enthusiasts, high-income households, Jeep Wrangler cross-shoppers) convert better, and you can bid higher for them. Also adjust bids by device as data comes in — don't pay the same for a desktop browsing session and a mobile call.

5

Measurement, Optimization, and Scale Rules

The technical setup

This phase is where most dealer campaigns go wrong — they either change things too fast (before data is significant) or too slow (letting a broken keyword run for months). Here are the specific rules for this campaign:

  • Primary KPI: Cost per qualified lead (CPL). A qualified lead = form fill with a name and phone number, or a call 60 seconds or longer. Set this as a conversion action. Benchmark CPL for 4Runner in competitive markets: $40–$120. If you're above $150 consistently after 6 weeks, the problem is usually landing page conversion rate or bid strategy, not keywords.
  • Weekly checks (15 minutes): Search Terms report — add converting terms as exact match keywords; add irrelevant terms as negatives. Check impression share — if lost IS to budget exceeds 30%, raise daily budget before touching bids. If lost IS to rank exceeds 40%, improve ad quality or raise bids on top performers.
  • Cut rule: Any keyword with 80+ clicks and zero conversions over 30 days — pause it. Don't delete, pause. 4Runner trim-specific terms (TRD Pro, TRD Off-Road, SR5, Limited, Venture) should each be evaluated independently; they attract different buyer intent and different price sensitivity.
  • Scale trigger for VLAs: Once Search delivers 15 leads/month consistently, activate VLAs. Once combined campaigns deliver 30+ conversions/month, consider adding Performance Max with your vehicle feed and conversion data already populated.
  • Retargeting note: Do not run a standalone retargeting campaign until your Search + VLA campaigns generate at least 500 website visitors per month. Below that threshold, the retargeting audience is too small and the budget fragmentation hurts more than it helps. Once you hit that traffic level, remarketing lists for search ads (RLSA) on your existing Search campaign is the right first move — bid up 20–30% for past site visitors searching 4Runner terms again, rather than spinning up a separate Display retargeting campaign.
  • Competitor terms: Bidding on Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or Lexus GX terms is legal and can work, but you cannot mention competitors by name in ad text. These terms typically have lower conversion rates (buyer intent is for the competitor's model) and require separate ad groups with tailored copy ('Comparing SUVs? See Why 4Runner Holds Its Value'). Test with a small budget ($10–$15/day) in a separate ad group before scaling.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

In plain English

Check the Search Terms report every week and keep pruning irrelevant queries. Pause any keyword that gets 80+ clicks with no conversions. Don't touch bids weekly — give changes 2 weeks to show results. The scale trigger is real lead volume, not impressions or clicks. Don't run retargeting until you have real traffic — 500 visitors/month is the floor.

The recipe card

  • Start with Google Search using phrase and exact match 4Runner-specific keywords only — no broad match
  • Add Vehicle Listing Ads once your inventory feed is verified in Google Merchant Center
  • As an authorized Toyota dealer you can use the brand name in ads — just don't imply official Toyota endorsement
  • CPL benchmark is $40–$120; if you're consistently above $150, the landing page is the problem, not the keywords
  • Don't run standalone retargeting until you hit 500 visitors/month — use RLSA bid adjustments on Search instead
