Read this first — every recipe, every time

This is a recipe, not a guarantee. How well any ad campaign performs depends on things no recipe can control: your budget, how crowded and expensive your industry's auctions are, the products you sell and what you charge for them, how well your website actually converts visitors, the quality of your customer support, your reviews and reputation, your creative, and plain timing. A perfect recipe on top of a weak offer or a broken website will still lose money — ads amplify what's already there, good or bad.

The budgets shown are suggestions only — yours could and should vary with your available funds and your goals. Follow this recipe with caution: make sure every step lines up with your budget and your business, and edit where necessary. We explain why each step exists, but nothing here is one-size-fits-all. Before you spend a dollar, be blunt with yourself about the list above — get your house in order, then use the recipe to learn and test. That's what it's for.

Check the rules that govern your industry before you run anything. Plenty of businesses carry advertising obligations that have nothing to do with the ad platforms: licensing boards, professional advertising standards, rules about what you may claim and how you must substantiate it, age restrictions, and consent laws covering email, texting, and calling. Those rules are yours to know, they vary by state and country, and they override any step in this recipe.

If you work in a licensed or regulated field — health and medical, legal, financial and lending, insurance, real estate, alcohol, firearms, cannabis, childcare, education, anything with a board or a license behind it — confirm what applies to you before you spend a dollar, and ask your attorney or your licensing body if you are not certain. Nothing on this site is legal advice.

This recipe uses YouTube (via Google Ads) as the single platform, starting with a conversion tracking foundation, then running low-cost in-stream campaigns to build audience signals before graduating to demand-gen automation. YouTube is the right call here because luxury car buyers research heavily through long-form video — walkarounds, comparisons, test-drive recaps — before they ever visit a lot, and a $50/day budget on YouTube buys real qualified view time that Meta’s feed scroll simply doesn’t.

This recipe is for independent or franchise luxury dealerships (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, or independent pre-owned luxury) with little to no existing web traffic, no prior ad history, and a modest budget under $75/day. The core problem: you’re selling a $50,000+ product to a buyer who takes 3–6 months to decide, so every dollar spent before you have audience data is partially blind — this recipe is designed to spend that early money in a way that generates reusable signal rather than throwing it away.

What can you afford to pay for a customer?

1

Tracking Foundation & Compliance Baseline

The technical setup

Install Google Tag (via Google Tag Manager) and fire the following conversion actions in Google Ads:

  • Lead form submission — thank-you page URL trigger, primary conversion, count = one
  • Phone call from website — Google forwarding number or GTM call click listener, 60-second minimum, primary conversion
  • Schedule test drive / book appointment — form or button click, primary conversion
  • Vehicle detail page (VDP) view — page-view trigger on /inventory/* URLs, secondary conversion (signal only, do not use for Smart Bidding)

Set all primary conversions to Account-level conversion action. Verify in Tag Assistant and wait for at least one real test conversion per action before running paid traffic. Link your Google Ads account to Google Analytics 4 and import GA4 audiences (will populate over time). Also link to your vehicle inventory feed in Google Merchant Center if you carry 10+ vehicles — this unlocks Vehicle Ads later.

Regulatory note: Luxury auto dealers operating under a dealer license must verify that their advertising complies with state dealer advertising rules, FTC used-car and pricing disclosure requirements, and any manufacturer co-op compliance standards — these vary by state and franchise agreement and override anything in this recipe.

In plain English

Before spending a dollar on ads, make sure you can actually measure what matters. Set up Google Tag Manager on your site and tell Google Ads to track three things: someone submitting a lead form, someone calling from the site, and someone booking a test drive. A vehicle detail page view is worth tracking too, but only as a secondary signal — don't let the algorithm optimize to that or it'll chase tire-kickers. Connect Google Analytics 4 and Merchant Center while you're at it. And yes — check your state's dealer advertising rules before you run anything. Pricing disclosures, "as low as" claims, and used-car disclaimers are regulated and vary by state.

New to "funnel" talk? What top, middle, and bottom mean

Think of every person who could ever buy from you as water moving through a funnel. Top of funnel is strangers — people who've never heard of the business. Campaigns here buy attention and first visits, not sales, so expect cheap clicks and few purchases. Middle of funnel is people who've shown interest — they visited, engaged, or are comparing options. Campaigns here re-engage and build the case. Bottom of funnel is people ready to buy right now — searching for exactly what you sell or abandoning a cart. Campaigns here convert; the clicks cost the most because the intent is worth the most. Full funnel means automated campaigns that work every stage at once. One thing that surprises people: recipes usually start at the bottom — capture the demand that already exists before spending money creating new demand at the top.

2

Brand & Model Intent — Search Campaign

The technical setup

This campaign exists to capture buyers already in-market for the specific makes and models you sell. At a modest budget it will generate your first real conversion data and show you which model searches actually turn into leads — intelligence you'll need before scaling video.

Campaign type: Search campaign
Bidding: Maximize Clicks (capped at $4.50/click) for the first 30 days — switch to Target CPA once you have 20+ conversions in a 30-day window
Budget: $20–$25/day
Network: Google Search only — uncheck Search Partners and Display Network
Location: 25–40 mile radius around the dealership (tighten or expand based on your DMA)
Ad schedule: Start all hours; after 2 weeks, review the hour-of-day report and exclude overnight hours if conversion rate drops significantly
Ad groups: Split by make/model family (e.g., BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4, Lexus ES). Each ad group gets 3 RSAs with headlines pulling model name, price range, inventory availability, and a CTA ("Schedule a Test Drive Today").
Ad policy note: Google may require price claims to be accurate and non-deceptive. Avoid "lowest price" superlatives unless you can substantiate them. Dealer franchise agreements may restrict how you reference MSRP.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

BOTTOM OF FUNNEL
Campaign setup Google — Search campaign

Targets people actively searching for a specific make and model near them — these are the highest-intent buyers in the funnel.

  1. Go to campaigns.google.com → + New Campaign → select goal: Leads
  2. Select campaign type: Search → click Continue
  3. Name the campaign: Search — [Make/Model] Intent | [City]
  4. Under Bidding, choose Maximize Clicks; set a maximum CPC bid cap of $4.50
  5. Set daily budget: $20–$25
  6. Under Networks, uncheck 'Include Google search partners' and uncheck 'Display Network'
  7. Under Locations, choose 'Enter another location,' type your city, and set a 25-mile radius; set Location options to 'Presence: People in or regularly in your targeted locations'
  8. Create ad groups by make/model family (e.g., 'BMW 3 Series,' 'Mercedes C-Class'); paste in the keyword list using phrase and exact match only
  9. For each ad group, create at least 2 Responsive Search Ads with 8–10 headlines (include model name, city, price range, CTA) and 3–4 descriptions
  10. Add negative keywords from the list below at the campaign level before launch
Starter keywords — copy, localize, and prune to fit
"BMW for sale near me" "Mercedes-Benz for sale [city]" "Audi dealer [city]" "Lexus dealer near me" "used BMW [city]" "certified pre-owned Mercedes" "luxury car dealership [city]" "BMW 3 Series for sale" "Mercedes C-Class [city]" "Audi A4 lease deals" "Lexus ES 350 for sale near me" "luxury used cars [city]" [BMW dealer near me] [Mercedes dealer near me] [Audi dealer near me] [Lexus dealer near me] [certified pre-owned BMW] [luxury car dealer [city]]
Starter negative keywords
free cheap how to DIY rental hire jobs mechanic parts repair insurance course
In plain English

This is your most direct campaign: people typing "BMW 3 Series for sale near me" are ready to act. You're not doing anything fancy here — just making sure you show up when someone is already shopping for exactly what you sell. Keep the budget modest ($20–$25/day), only show on Google Search (not the wider display network), and limit the radius to your realistic drive market. Your ads should be specific to the model — generic "luxury cars" copy won't win on quality score or clicks. Results here depend heavily on your pricing, reviews, and whether your VDP pages are actually useful. Good ads sending traffic to a slow or thin website will waste money regardless of settings.

3

Awareness & Signal Seeding — YouTube In-Stream

The technical setup

This campaign exists to build a warm audience pool before there is enough site traffic to retarget. YouTube in-stream (skippable) is chosen over Demand Gen here because at $20–$30/day you need the lowest CPM format that still delivers qualified view time. The goal is not conversions — it is populating your 'Viewed 30 seconds of video' and 'Visited channel' YouTube audiences, which become retargetable assets once they hit 1,000 members.

Campaign type: Video campaign — Skippable in-stream (objective: Brand Awareness and Reach)
Bidding: Target CPM, start at $8–$12
Budget: $20–$25/day
Targeting layers (combine, don't silo):

  • In-market audience: Vehicles & Transportation > Auto Purchasers > Luxury Vehicles
  • Custom intent audience: build one using URLs of Cars & Bids, Autotrader luxury listings, and competitor dealership sites — this is the most powerful signal layer at this budget
  • Geographic: same 25–40 mile radius as search campaign

Creative: Shoot or source a 60–90 second walkaround of your highest-turn inventory. The hook must land in the first 5 seconds (before the skip button): show the car moving, not a logo. Include a companion banner and overlay CTA linking to the model's VDP. Create one ad per featured model. No need for broadcast production — a competent phone walkaround with good light outperforms studio spots on YouTube for this budget level.

Ad policy note: YouTube/Google does not classify auto dealer advertising under a Special Ad Category, but pricing claims must be accurate at time of serving. If running co-op ads, confirm manufacturer brand guidelines permit YouTube placements.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

TOP OF FUNNEL
Campaign setup Google — Video campaign — Skippable in-stream

Introduces the dealership to in-market luxury buyers who have no prior relationship with the brand — purely top-of-funnel signal seeding.

  1. Go to campaigns.google.com → + New Campaign → select goal: Brand Awareness and Reach
  2. Select campaign type: Video → select subtype: Skippable in-stream ad → Continue
  3. Name the campaign: YouTube — Awareness & Signal | [City]
  4. Under Bidding, select Target CPM; set bid at $10
  5. Set daily budget: $20–$25
  6. Under Networks, keep YouTube Videos checked; uncheck Video Partners on the Display Network
  7. Under Locations, enter your city and set a 25-mile radius
  8. Under Audiences, go to Browse > In-market > Vehicles & Transportation > Luxury Vehicles; then add a Custom Segment (custom intent) by pasting competitor dealership URLs and luxury auto listing site URLs (e.g., autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/new-cars/bmw)
  9. Under Devices, leave all devices checked — mobile is fine for awareness
  10. Upload your walkaround video(s) in the creative section; set a companion banner and a final URL pointing to the relevant vehicle detail page; add a headline overlay CTA ('See Full Inventory' or 'Schedule a Test Drive')
In plain English

You don't have an audience yet, so you need to build one cheaply before you can do anything smart with retargeting. This YouTube campaign puts your car walkaround videos in front of people who are already browsing luxury car content or visiting competitor sites — they may not be ready to call today, but they are in the market. You're paying for views, not clicks, and that's intentional: the point is to get 1,000+ people into a 'watched my video' audience so you can eventually retarget them. Keep expectations realistic: at $20–$25/day this is slow-drip awareness, not a lead machine. The quality of your video matters enormously here — a shaky, dark walkaround will be skipped immediately and waste every impression.

4

Demand Gen Campaign — Graduated to Once Signal Exists

The technical setup

Launch this phase only after you have accumulated: (a) at least 500 YouTube video viewers (30-second views) in the past 30 days, and (b) at least 300 site visitors from any source in the past 30 days. Before those thresholds, this campaign will underperform — do not rush it.

Campaign type: Demand Gen campaign (Google Ads)
Objective: Leads or Website Traffic
Bidding: Maximize Conversions (primary conversions only — leads + calls + bookings)
Budget: $25–$35/day (total daily budget across all active campaigns now $55–$75)
Audience layers:

  • YouTube viewer list: 'Watched any video from my channel' (30-day window)
  • Website visitor list from GA4 (all visitors, 30-day window)
  • Similar audiences built from the above (Google generates these automatically in Demand Gen)
  • Same in-market + custom intent layers from Phase 3 as a catch-all for new reach

Placements: YouTube (in-stream + Shorts), Discover, Gmail — leave all checked; let the algorithm allocate
Creative: Use 3–5 image cards (exterior shots + interior details of current inventory) plus the same video assets from Phase 3. Demand Gen accepts both. Refresh creatives every 4–6 weeks as inventory turns.
Retargeting note: This is where retargeting gets folded in — not as a standalone campaign, but as the warm audience layers inside a campaign that also reaches new in-market users. This approach avoids fragmenting your budget the way a separate retargeting campaign would at this spend level.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

FULL FUNNEL
Campaign setup Google — Demand Gen campaign

Spans the funnel — re-engages warm video viewers and site visitors while also reaching new in-market lookalikes, letting the algorithm allocate across stages.

  1. Go to campaigns.google.com → + New Campaign → select goal: Leads
  2. Select campaign type: Demand Gen → Continue
  3. Name the campaign: Demand Gen — Warm Audiences | [City]
  4. Under Bidding, select Maximize Conversions; confirm primary conversion actions are selected (leads, calls, bookings only)
  5. Set daily budget: $25–$35
  6. Under Audiences, click + Add Audience; under Your Data, add your YouTube viewer list (30-day, 30-second views) and your GA4 website visitors list (30-day all visitors); under Similar Segments, allow Google to add lookalikes
  7. Add the same In-Market (Luxury Vehicles) and Custom Intent segments from Phase 3 as additional reach layers
  8. Under Ad formats, upload 3–5 high-resolution inventory images (1.91:1 and 1:1 crops) plus your existing walkaround video(s); write 3 headlines (max 40 chars) and 2 descriptions (max 90 chars) per ad — include model name and a direct CTA
  9. Set final URL to your main inventory page or the most relevant model VDP
  10. Leave all placements (YouTube, Discover, Gmail) checked and let the algorithm allocate — do not manually restrict placements at this budget level
In plain English

Once you've got a few hundred people who've watched your videos and visited your site, you can stop just building an audience and start trying to convert one. The Demand Gen campaign is Google's way of running image and video ads across YouTube, Gmail, and the Discover feed — it works better than a straight awareness campaign because it can optimize toward actual leads, not just views. The key rule: don't turn this on early. Launching it before you have real audience lists just means Google is guessing, and at $25–$35/day, guessing is expensive. Results still depend on your offer — if your VDP pages load slowly, your pricing is uncompetitive, or your lead form asks for too much upfront, even a well-built campaign won't convert.

5

Measurement Discipline & Iteration Cadence

The technical setup

Run the following review cadence:

  • Weekly (15 min): Check Search Terms report on the Search campaign — add any irrelevant terms as exact-match negatives. Check conversion volume by action type — confirm calls and form fills are firing correctly. If VDP views are inflating your conversion count, move them to 'Observation only' in conversion settings.
  • Bi-weekly (30 min): Review YouTube audience member counts in Audience Manager — are your viewer lists growing toward 1,000? If not, increase Target CPM by $1–$2 or broaden the custom intent URL list.
  • Monthly (1 hour): Pull a campaign performance report: cost per lead by campaign, click-through rate, view rate (YouTube). If Search CPA exceeds 3–4% of your average vehicle gross profit, review ad copy and landing page quality before raising bids. Switch Search bidding from Maximize Clicks to Target CPA once you hit 20 conversions in 30 days.
  • Retargeting unlock: Once your site is generating 500+ visitors/month and your YouTube audience lists each exceed 1,000 members, you can break out a dedicated retargeting ad group inside Demand Gen (or a separate RLSA layer in Search) without fragmenting your budget meaningfully.
  • Vehicle Ads unlock: If you've linked Merchant Center and have a vehicle feed with 10+ listings, test a Vehicle Ads campaign (Search or PMax for vehicle feeds) at $15–$20/day — these pull live inventory into the ad unit and can significantly improve CTR on in-market searches.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

In plain English

Most dealerships either never look at their ad data or drown in it. The goal here is a simple, repeatable routine. Each week, spend 15 minutes checking what search terms are triggering your ads and blocking the bad ones — this alone can reclaim 15–20% of wasted budget. Every two weeks, check whether your YouTube audiences are actually growing. Once a month, ask one question: is my cost per lead sustainable relative to what a sold vehicle earns? If yes, hold steady or scale. If no, fix the landing page or the offer before spending more. The numbers will tell you when you're ready to layer in retargeting and vehicle feed ads — don't rush those unlocks before the thresholds are met.

The recipe card

  • Start with rock-solid conversion tracking — leads, calls, and test drive bookings — before spending a dollar on ads
  • Run a Search campaign ($20–$25/day) to capture in-market buyers searching specific makes and models near you
  • Seed your YouTube audience with in-stream video walkarounds targeting in-market and custom-intent audiences
  • Unlock Demand Gen only after 500 video viewers + 300 site visitors — launching it early wastes budget on guesswork
  • Review search terms weekly, audience list growth bi-weekly, and cost-per-lead monthly — scale what earns, cut what doesn't
