TikTok for Food Trucks
This is a recipe, not a guarantee. How well any ad campaign performs depends on things no recipe can control: your budget, how crowded and expensive your industry's auctions are, the products you sell and what you charge for them, how well your website actually converts visitors, the quality of your customer support, your reviews and reputation, your creative, and plain timing. A perfect recipe on top of a weak offer or a broken website will still lose money — ads amplify what's already there, good or bad.
The budgets shown are suggestions only — yours could and should vary with your available funds and your goals. Follow this recipe with caution: make sure every step lines up with your budget and your business, and edit where necessary. We explain why each step exists, but nothing here is one-size-fits-all. Before you spend a dollar, be blunt with yourself about the list above — get your house in order, then use the recipe to learn and test. That's what it's for.
Check the rules that govern your industry before you run anything. Plenty of businesses carry advertising obligations that have nothing to do with the ad platforms: licensing boards, professional advertising standards, rules about what you may claim and how you must substantiate it, age restrictions, and consent laws covering email, texting, and calling. Those rules are yours to know, they vary by state and country, and they override any step in this recipe.
If you work in a licensed or regulated field — health and medical, legal, financial and lending, insurance, real estate, alcohol, firearms, cannabis, childcare, education, anything with a board or a license behind it — confirm what applies to you before you spend a dollar, and ask your attorney or your licensing body if you are not certain. Nothing on this site is legal advice.
This recipe uses TikTok exclusively, starting with pixel installation and organic content validation, then moving into paid Reach and Traffic campaigns before graduating to a full-funnel Video Shopping or Lead Generation push. TikTok is the right single platform here because food trucks are inherently visual, location-driven, and discovery-dependent — people don’t search “food truck near me” on Google with enough volume to justify a search budget at this scale, and TikTok’s short-video format matches exactly how food truck content already goes viral organically.
This recipe is for independent food truck owners or small fleets with little to no paid ad history, no pixel data, and a daily budget under $50. The core problem is that food trucks live and die by foot traffic, and most owners rely entirely on Instagram posts and word of mouth — TikTok’s algorithm gives genuinely small businesses a rare chance to reach thousands of local strangers for a few dollars a day, but only if the creative and targeting are set up correctly from the start.
What can you afford to pay for a customer?
Advertising can only cost what's left after everything else. Put in what a typical order looks like and this works out the rest.
These are your numbers as you've typed them. Connect your store and we'll work this out from your actual orders instead — including the costs most people forget.
Pixel, Profile, and Tracking Foundation
Install the TikTok Pixel before spending a dollar. Go to TikTok Ads Manager → Assets → Events → Web Events → Manage and create a new pixel. Use the TikTok Pixel Helper Chrome extension to confirm it fires on your site or link-in-bio landing page. If you have no website, set up a free Linktree or Beacons page with your schedule, location map link, and menu — this becomes your conversion destination. Configure at minimum two standard events: ViewContent (page load) and Contact (tap on phone number or map link). Enable Automatic Advanced Matching to pass hashed email/phone when available. Also connect your TikTok Business Account to your Ads Manager so organic post performance informs paid creative decisions later.
Why this phase exists: TikTok's optimization algorithms are useless without event data. Every dollar spent before the pixel is live is a dollar that can never be recovered for retargeting or lookalike building. Do this first, even if it takes a full week.
Before running any ads, you need TikTok's tracking code (the pixel) installed on whatever page you're sending people to — even a simple link-in-bio page works. This lets TikTok learn who actually taps your links or looks up your location, which makes every future ad smarter. Think of it as laying the foundation before building the house.
Organic Content Validation Before Paid Spend
Post 6–10 short TikTok videos organically from your business account before launching paid campaigns. Proven food truck content formats: behind-the-scenes prep (chopping, saucing, early morning setup), first-customer-of-the-day reactions, location reveal ("We're at [corner/lot] until 3pm"), and menu item close-ups with ASMR audio. Track each video's average watch time % and profile visits in TikTok Analytics. Any video hitting above 25% average watch time or generating 200+ profile visits organically is a creative signal worth paying to amplify. Do not skip this step — boosting a weak video wastes budget and trains the algorithm on the wrong audience.
Why this phase exists: TikTok's paid algorithm heavily rewards creative that already shows organic engagement signals. Identifying your top 2–3 performers before spending money means your first paid campaigns start with proven hooks, not guesses.
Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.
Post 6–10 short videos on your TikTok account for free first. Watch which ones people actually finish watching or cause them to visit your profile. The videos that perform best organically are the ones you'll pay to promote — this saves you from wasting money boosting content that nobody cares about.
New to "funnel" talk? What top, middle, and bottom mean
Think of every person who could ever buy from you as water moving through a funnel. Top of funnel is strangers — people who've never heard of the business. Campaigns here buy attention and first visits, not sales, so expect cheap clicks and few purchases. Middle of funnel is people who've shown interest — they visited, engaged, or are comparing options. Campaigns here re-engage and build the case. Bottom of funnel is people ready to buy right now — searching for exactly what you sell or abandoning a cart. Campaigns here convert; the clicks cost the most because the intent is worth the most. Full funnel means automated campaigns that work every stage at once. One thing that surprises people: recipes usually start at the bottom — capture the demand that already exists before spending money creating new demand at the top.
Local Awareness Spark — Reach Campaign
Campaign type: Reach campaign (TikTok Ads Manager → Campaign → Objective: Reach). Budget: $15/day. One ad group. Targeting: Location set to a 10–15 mile radius around your primary operating area (use the map pin, not just city-level). Age: 18–44. No interest or behavior layering — let TikTok's system find your audience with broad targeting at this stage; narrow targeting at low budgets shrinks delivery and inflates CPMs. Placements: TikTok only (uncheck Pangle and other audience network placements). Creative: upload your top 2 organic videos as Spark Ads (this preserves the organic like/comment counts, adding social proof). Set frequency cap at 2 impressions per user per 7 days to avoid burning out a small local audience. Bid strategy: Reach & Frequency not available at this budget — use standard delivery. Goal: get your CPM below $8 and your cost-per-profile-visit below $0.50 in week one.
Why this phase exists: Food trucks need local name recognition before anything else. A Reach campaign at $15/day in a tight geographic radius is the cheapest way to get your truck's face in front of thousands of local people repeatedly. This is pure top-of-funnel brand building — don't judge it by clicks or sales yet.
Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.
Pure awareness play — introducing the food truck to local strangers who have never heard of it, with no expectation of immediate conversion.
- Go to TikTok Ads Manager and click Campaign → Create. Select objective: Reach.
- Name the campaign clearly (e.g., "FoodTruck — Local Reach — [Month]"). Set campaign budget to $15/day.
- Create one Ad Group. Under Placements, select TikTok only — uncheck Pangle and Global App Bundle.
- Under Location, click the map pin and draw or enter a 10–15 mile radius around your main operating area. Set Age to 18–44. Leave interests and behaviors blank.
- Set Optimization Goal to Reach. Leave bidding on Standard delivery (no manual bid needed).
- Set Frequency Cap to 2 times per 7 days per user to protect your small local audience from ad fatigue.
- Under Creatives, click Use Existing Post (Spark Ad). Connect your TikTok Business Account and select your top 2 organic videos by watch-time percentage.
- Write a simple caption for each ad referencing your location and hours (e.g., "Find us at [corner] — open Tue–Sat 11am–3pm").
- Submit for review. Monitor CPM and Profile Visits daily for the first 7 days before making any changes.
This is your "get seen" campaign. You're paying TikTok $15 a day to show your best videos to thousands of people within driving distance of where you park. You're not trying to sell anything yet — you're just making sure locals know you exist. Think of it like a billboard, but one that only shows to people nearby and costs a fraction of the price.
Traffic & Engagement Warm-Up — Traffic Campaign
Campaign type: Traffic campaign optimized for Landing Page Views. Budget: $15/day. Run this simultaneously with the Reach campaign once the Reach campaign has been live for 7 days and has delivered at least 5,000 impressions. One ad group. Targeting: same 10–15 mile radius, age 18–44, but now add Interest targeting: Food & Beverage, Street Food, Local Events, Foodie. This narrows the audience slightly to people with demonstrated food interest — acceptable at this stage because you're optimizing for clicks, not just views. Destination URL: your Linktree/Beacons page or website. Creative: use your third-best organic video plus one new video with an explicit call-to-action overlay ("Tap to see today's location →"). Monitor Cost Per Landing Page View — target under $0.30. If it exceeds $0.60 after 3 days, swap the creative before touching targeting.
Why this phase exists: The Reach campaign builds awareness but doesn't push people to act. This Traffic campaign starts moving warm viewers toward your location page, feeding the pixel with ViewContent events that will power lookalike audiences in the next phase. You need at least 50–100 landing page view events before TikTok's algorithm can optimize meaningfully.
Honest caveat: Clicks to a link-in-bio page do not equal customers at your window. Foot traffic conversion depends entirely on your location convenience, menu appeal, pricing, and whether your schedule is clearly communicated. The ads get people to the page — the page and your offer close the deal.
Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.
Moves people from passive awareness to active interest by driving them to the location/menu page — feeding the pixel with real behavioral data.
- In TikTok Ads Manager, create a new Campaign. Select objective: Traffic.
- Name it clearly (e.g., "FoodTruck — Traffic — [Month]"). Set campaign budget to $15/day.
- Create one Ad Group. Under Placements, select TikTok only.
- Under Location, use the same 10–15 mile radius as your Reach campaign. Age: 18–44.
- Under Interests & Behaviors, add interests: Food & Beverage, Street Food, Local Events. Keep the audience size above 200,000 — if it drops below, remove one interest layer.
- Set Optimization Goal to Landing Page Views. Leave bidding on Standard delivery.
- Set your destination URL to your location/menu landing page (Linktree, Beacons, or your website).
- Upload your third-best organic video as a Spark Ad, plus one new video with a text overlay CTA like "Tap for today's location →".
- Monitor Cost Per Landing Page View daily. If above $0.60 after 3 days, swap creative before adjusting targeting.
- Check TikTok Pixel Events in Assets → Events to confirm Landing Page View events are firing correctly.
After a week of the awareness campaign, you add a second $15/day campaign that actually sends people to your location page when they tap. You're targeting people who already like food content, so they're a warmer audience. This starts teaching TikTok's system who your real potential customers are, which makes future ads smarter and cheaper.
Lookalike Scaling — Video Views or Traffic Lookalike Campaign
Once your pixel has recorded at least 100 Landing Page View events (typically 3–5 weeks in at this budget), create a Custom Audience from website visitors (Assets → Audiences → Create Audience → Website Traffic → All Visitors, 30-day window). Then build a Lookalike Audience at 1–3% similarity from that custom audience, restricted to your state or metro region. Launch a new Traffic or Reach campaign targeting this lookalike only — same $15/day budget, same TikTok-only placement. Simultaneously, if you have 1,000+ video views on any single organic or Spark Ad video, create a Video Interaction Custom Audience (watched 75%+) and build a second lookalike from that. Test both lookalikes in separate ad groups within the same campaign to see which delivers lower CPMs.
Retargeting note: At under $50/day total, your retargeting pool (people who visited your page) will be too small to run as a standalone campaign — likely under 500 people per month. Fold retargeting into this lookalike campaign by adding your website visitor custom audience as an additional ad group only when that audience exceeds 1,000 members. Until then, the lookalike does the heavy lifting.
Why this phase exists: Lookalike audiences let TikTok find new people who behave like your actual interested visitors — this is where cost-per-result typically drops 20–40% compared to interest-only targeting, because the signal is based on real behavior rather than declared interests.
Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.
Spans top and middle funnel — finding new lookalike strangers while optionally re-engaging past visitors once the retargeting pool is large enough to matter.
- Go to Assets → Audiences → Create Audience → Website Traffic. Select All Visitors, 30-day window. Name it clearly.
- Once the audience populates (minimum 100 users required by TikTok), go to Create Audience → Lookalike Audience. Select your website visitor custom audience as the source.
- Set similarity to 1–3%. Set location to your state or metro region (not nationwide — keeps it locally relevant).
- Create a second lookalike from your Video Interaction audience: Assets → Audiences → Create Audience → TikTok Engagement → Video Views → Watched 75%+, 30-day window. Build a lookalike from this source too.
- Create a new Traffic campaign at $15/day. Create two ad groups — one targeting each lookalike audience. Keep all other settings identical so you're testing audience only.
- Set Placements to TikTok only. Optimization goal: Landing Page Views. Standard delivery.
- Use your best-performing creative from previous phases as Spark Ads in both ad groups.
- After 7 days, pause the higher-cost ad group and consolidate budget into the winner.
- Add your website visitor custom audience as a third ad group only if it has grown above 1,000 members — otherwise leave retargeting for a later phase.
Once enough people have visited your page, TikTok can find thousands more locals who look and act just like them. This is called a lookalike audience, and it's usually when ads start getting noticeably cheaper and more effective. You're not guessing at who might like your food anymore — TikTok is finding people who match your real customers.
Measurement Discipline and Ongoing Creative Refresh
Set a weekly 20-minute review cadence using TikTok Ads Manager's built-in reporting. Track these metrics in order of priority: (1) Cost Per Landing Page View — your primary efficiency metric; (2) Video Completion Rate — if below 15%, the hook is failing; (3) CPM by ad group — rising CPMs signal audience fatigue or increased auction competition; (4) Profile Visits and Follows from Spark Ads — a secondary signal of brand-building momentum. Creative fatigue is the #1 killer of TikTok campaigns at this budget level: plan to introduce at least one new video every 2–3 weeks. Use TikTok's Creative Center → Trend Discovery to find trending sounds and formats in the Food & Beverage category that you can adapt. Do not change targeting or budgets and creative simultaneously — change one variable at a time so you know what moved the needle. Attribution window: set to 7-day click, 1-day view in campaign settings to avoid over-counting.
What this recipe cannot control: Ad performance is a multiplier on your underlying offer. If your truck is hard to find, your hours are inconsistent, your prices are out of step with the area, or your menu photos are low quality, no targeting fix will compensate. The recipe gets eyes on your content — converting those eyes into customers at your window is entirely dependent on the real-world experience you deliver.
Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.
Every week, spend 20 minutes checking three numbers: how much you're paying per website tap, how many people finish watching your videos, and whether your costs are creeping up. When costs rise, it usually means people are getting bored of seeing the same video — swap in a fresh one every few weeks. And remember: TikTok can put your truck in front of thousands of hungry locals, but it can't make them show up if your location is confusing or your hours keep changing.
The recipe card
- Before anything else: confirm the advertising rules for your own industry and location — licensing board requirements, professional advertising standards, what you may claim, age restrictions, and consent rules for email, texting, and calling. They override every step below.
- Start with TikTok Pixel on your location/menu page — no exceptions, even if it's just a Linktree.
- Post 6–10 organic videos first and identify your top performers by watch time before spending a dollar.
- Run a $15/day local Reach campaign using Spark Ads of your best organic content to build neighborhood awareness.
- Add a $15/day Traffic campaign after 7 days to drive page visits and feed the pixel with real behavioral data.
- Build lookalike audiences once you hit 100 pixel events — that's when targeting gets efficient and costs drop.
