Read this first — every recipe, every time

This is a recipe, not a guarantee. How well any ad campaign performs depends on things no recipe can control: your budget, how crowded and expensive your industry's auctions are, the products you sell and what you charge for them, how well your website actually converts visitors, the quality of your customer support, your reviews and reputation, your creative, and plain timing. A perfect recipe on top of a weak offer or a broken website will still lose money — ads amplify what's already there, good or bad.

The budgets shown are suggestions only — yours could and should vary with your available funds and your goals. Follow this recipe with caution: make sure every step lines up with your budget and your business, and edit where necessary. We explain why each step exists, but nothing here is one-size-fits-all. Before you spend a dollar, be blunt with yourself about the list above — get your house in order, then use the recipe to learn and test. That's what it's for.

Check the rules that govern your industry before you run anything. Plenty of businesses carry advertising obligations that have nothing to do with the ad platforms: licensing boards, professional advertising standards, rules about what you may claim and how you must substantiate it, age restrictions, and consent laws covering email, texting, and calling. Those rules are yours to know, they vary by state and country, and they override any step in this recipe.

If you work in a licensed or regulated field — health and medical, legal, financial and lending, insurance, real estate, alcohol, firearms, cannabis, childcare, education, anything with a board or a license behind it — confirm what applies to you before you spend a dollar, and ask your attorney or your licensing body if you are not certain. Nothing on this site is legal advice.

This recipe runs entirely on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and follows a strict sequence: install the pixel and verify purchases fire correctly, seed the algorithm with low-cost engagement traffic, then graduate to Advantage+ Shopping once real conversion signals exist. Meta is the right single platform for home decor because the category is discovery-heavy — shoppers don’t know your brand yet and aren’t searching for it by name, but they respond strongly to visual creative in a scroll environment, and Meta’s catalog and automated placements are purpose-built for exactly that.

This recipe is for a home decor brand — think wall art, throw pillows, candles, furniture accents — that has a working Shopify or WooCommerce store, little or no paid traffic history, and a total daily budget under $50. The core problem is a cold pixel: without purchase events, Meta’s algorithm has nothing to optimize toward, so every dollar spent before the pixel is warm is really buying data, not sales. The phases below treat it that way honestly.

What can you afford to pay for a customer?

Advertising can only cost what's left after everything else. Put in what a typical order looks like and this works out the rest.

These are your numbers as you've typed them. Connect your store and we'll work this out from your actual orders instead — including the costs most people forget.

Pixel Foundation and Catalog Setup

The technical setup

Install the Meta Pixel via your e-commerce platform's native integration (Shopify's Meta channel or WooCommerce's Facebook for WooCommerce plugin). Verify that ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, and Purchase events all fire correctly using Meta's Test Events tool inside Events Manager — do not skip this step. Set up a Meta Commerce Catalog by connecting your product feed (Shopify auto-syncs; WooCommerce needs a feed plugin like Flexify or DataFeedWatch). Confirm every product has a price, image, description, and availability field populated. Enable Conversions API (CAPI) via your platform's server-side integration to reduce signal loss from iOS 14+ tracking restrictions. Set your Pixel's Aggregated Event Measurement priority order: Purchase → InitiateCheckout → AddToCart → ViewContent.

In plain English

Before spending a dollar on ads, make sure Meta can actually see what people do on your site. Install the tracking pixel, connect your product catalog so Meta knows what you sell, and turn on server-side tracking so iOS users don't disappear from your data. Then confirm every important action — viewing a product, adding to cart, buying — shows up correctly in Meta's dashboard. If the pixel is broken, every campaign that follows optimizes toward nothing.

New to "funnel" talk? What top, middle, and bottom mean

Think of every person who could ever buy from you as water moving through a funnel. Top of funnel is strangers — people who've never heard of the business. Campaigns here buy attention and first visits, not sales, so expect cheap clicks and few purchases. Middle of funnel is people who've shown interest — they visited, engaged, or are comparing options. Campaigns here re-engage and build the case. Bottom of funnel is people ready to buy right now — searching for exactly what you sell or abandoning a cart. Campaigns here convert; the clicks cost the most because the intent is worth the most. Full funnel means automated campaigns that work every stage at once. One thing that surprises people: recipes usually start at the bottom — capture the demand that already exists before spending money creating new demand at the top.

Cheap Signal Seeding with Traffic Campaigns

The technical setup

Run one or two Traffic campaigns optimized for Landing Page Views at $10–$15/day total. The sole purpose is to push real humans through your product pages so the pixel accumulates ViewContent and AddToCart events cheaply — you are buying data, not sales. Use broad interest targeting layered loosely: home decor, interior design, Apartment Therapy, HGTV, or similar. Keep audiences large (2M+ in size) so Meta has room to find cheap clicks. Use Advantage+ Placements. Creative: single lifestyle images or short Reels (6–15 sec) showing products in styled room settings — no talking-head videos, no text-heavy graphics. Run for 3–4 weeks or until you have at least 200–300 AddToCart events recorded in Events Manager, whichever comes first. Do not judge this phase by ROAS — it will look terrible. Judge it by cost per landing page view (target under $0.50) and by the event volume climbing in Events Manager.

TOP OF FUNNEL
Campaign setup Meta — Traffic campaign optimized for Landing Page Views

This campaign introduces the brand to cold strangers and generates the ViewContent and AddToCart signals the pixel needs before any purchase-optimized campaign can work.

  1. Go to Meta Ads Manager → Create → select Traffic as the campaign objective.
  2. At the campaign level, leave Advantage+ Campaign Budget off for now; set a manual daily budget of $10–$15.
  3. At the ad set level, set Conversion location to Website. Set the Optimization event to Landing Page Views.
  4. Under Audience, skip Custom Audiences for now. Use Detailed Targeting: add interests such as 'Home Decor,' 'Interior Design,' 'HGTV,' 'Apartment Therapy,' 'Wayfair.' Keep the estimated audience size above 2 million.
  5. Set Age to 22–55. Leave gender broad unless your product catalog skews heavily to one gender.
  6. Under Placements, select Advantage+ Placements (recommended) — let Meta find the cheapest landing page view inventory.
  7. At the ad level, create 2–3 ad variations: use high-quality lifestyle images (products styled in real rooms, not white-background product shots) or Reels-format vertical video under 15 seconds. Write short primary text focused on the visual appeal or a specific product benefit, not a discount.
  8. Set the destination URL to a collection or best-seller page — not the homepage — so ViewContent events fire on product pages.
  9. After publishing, open Events Manager → Test Events and confirm Landing Page View and ViewContent events are firing within the first 24 hours.
  10. Check weekly: if cost per landing page view exceeds $0.75 consistently, refresh creative before touching audience settings.
In plain English

This phase is purely about warming up the algorithm. You're spending a small amount each day to get real shoppers onto your product pages so Meta learns what kind of person browses and adds your items to their cart. Think of it as paying for a customer profile, not paying for sales. Use broad audiences and eye-catching lifestyle photos or short videos. After a few weeks you'll have enough data for the smarter campaign type in the next phase.

3

Catalog Retargeting Unlock — Later Milestone

The technical setup

Standalone retargeting campaigns are not recommended at budgets under $50/day. At this spend level, your site visitor pool is too small to fill a retargeting audience efficiently — Meta needs at least 1,000 people in a Custom Audience before delivery stabilizes, and a thin audience fragments your budget without meaningful reach. Instead, note this as a future unlock: once your site reaches 500+ unique visitors per day (organic + paid combined), create a Website Custom Audience of 30-day visitors and 30-day AddToCart non-purchasers, and run a separate Sales campaign optimized for Purchase targeting those audiences at $10–$15/day. Until that threshold, retargeting is handled automatically inside Advantage+ Shopping in the next phase.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

In plain English

You might be tempted to run a 'retargeting' campaign right away to chase people who visited your site. At a small budget with low traffic, that audience is too tiny — you'd be spending money to reach the same 50 people over and over. This phase is a placeholder: once your site gets 500+ visitors a day, come back and build a dedicated retargeting campaign. Until then, the Advantage+ Shopping campaign in the next phase handles re-engagement automatically.

4

Advantage+ Shopping Campaign

The technical setup

Once Events Manager shows a consistent 30–50 Purchase events per week (or at minimum 200+ AddToCart events if purchases are slow), create an Advantage+ Shopping Campaign (ASC). Set the campaign daily budget to $20–$35/day. Connect your product catalog. Set the Pixel and optimization event to Purchase. Leave the existing customer budget cap at 0% initially — you have no meaningful existing customer list yet. Set a ROAS goal only if you know your break-even ROAS (calculate: 1 ÷ gross margin); leave it blank if unsure, as a ROAS goal constrains delivery before the algorithm has calibrated. Use Advantage+ Creative to let Meta test image enhancements, but upload your own hero creative (3–5 lifestyle images and 1–2 short videos) rather than relying solely on catalog images. Run for at least 2 full weeks before drawing conclusions — the learning phase requires roughly 50 purchase events to exit. Honest caveat: ASC performance depends heavily on your product pricing, website conversion rate, and offer strength. The campaign settings are table stakes; the creative and landing page do the actual selling.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

FULL FUNNEL
Campaign setup Meta — Advantage+ Shopping Campaign

Advantage+ Shopping spans the full funnel — Meta allocates budget between cold prospecting and warm re-engagement automatically, which is why standalone retargeting campaigns are redundant at this budget level.

  1. In Meta Ads Manager → Create → select Sales as the campaign objective → choose Advantage+ Shopping Campaign when prompted (it appears as a recommended option after selecting Sales).
  2. Set the campaign-level daily budget to $20–$35/day. Do not use lifetime budgets during the learning phase.
  3. Connect your Meta Commerce Catalog when prompted. Confirm the correct catalog is selected.
  4. Set the Pixel to your verified pixel and the Conversion event to Purchase.
  5. Leave the Existing Customer Budget Cap at 0% — you don't have a meaningful customer list to separate yet. Revisit this once you have 1,000+ past purchasers in a list.
  6. Skip manual audience targeting — ASC handles this automatically. Do not add interest or demographic restrictions.
  7. At the ad level, upload 3–5 high-quality lifestyle images and 1–2 vertical videos (Reels format preferred, 15–30 sec). Write 2–3 primary text variations with different angles (room transformation, gift idea, quality/materials). Enable Advantage+ Creative to allow Meta to test enhancements.
  8. Set the destination to your website. Confirm the URL loads correctly and the Purchase pixel event fires on the order confirmation page.
  9. After launch, do not edit the campaign for at least 7 days — edits reset the learning phase. Monitor delivery and spend daily, but judge performance only after 14 days minimum.
  10. After 4 weeks, review the Breakdown by Age/Gender and Placement to understand who is buying — use this to inform creative decisions, not to add restrictions.
In plain English

This is the main event — Meta's most automated shopping campaign type, which handles prospecting and retargeting together. You're only launching it now because the pixel has real purchase data to learn from. Give it your best lifestyle photos and videos, connect your product catalog, and let it run for at least two weeks without panicking about early numbers. It will look inefficient in week one while it's still learning. The honest truth: if your product photos are weak, your prices are uncompetitive, or your checkout is clunky, no campaign setting fixes that.

Measurement Discipline and Iteration

The technical setup

Set a weekly 30-minute review cadence. Track these metrics in this order of priority: (1) Purchase events in Events Manager (server-side, deduped) — this is your source of truth, not the Ads Manager 'Purchases' column alone, which is affected by attribution window inflation. (2) MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio): total revenue ÷ total ad spend for the week — a blended view that avoids last-click over-attribution. (3) Cost per Purchase and ROAS in Ads Manager as directional signals only. Use a 7-day click, 1-day view attribution window to reduce view-through inflation. Do not compare weeks with different creative or budget levels — isolate one variable at a time. Creative refresh cadence: swap underperforming ads (lowest CTR or highest CPM relative to others) every 3–4 weeks. Do not kill the ASC campaign and restart — pause individual ads instead, which preserves learning. Scale budget by no more than 20% per week to avoid triggering a new learning phase.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

In plain English

Once campaigns are running, the job is to read the numbers honestly and change one thing at a time. Check your real purchase count in Events Manager (not just the Ads Manager dashboard, which can overcount). Calculate a simple blended return: total sales divided by total ad spend for the week. Refresh your creative every few weeks when engagement drops. When you want to increase budget, do it in small steps — a big jump resets the algorithm's learning and costs you efficiency. The biggest lever at this stage is almost always better creative and a better product page, not smarter campaign settings.

The recipe card

  • Start with pixel verification and catalog setup — broken tracking makes every campaign that follows worthless.
  • Run a Traffic campaign for 3–4 weeks at $10–$15/day to seed the pixel with ViewContent and AddToCart events before optimizing for purchases.
  • Skip standalone retargeting until your site hits 500+ daily visitors — below that, the audience is too thin and fragments your budget.
  • Graduate to Advantage+ Shopping only after 30–50 weekly purchases or 200+ AddToCart events; it needs real data to work.
  • Judge performance by blended Marketing Efficiency Ratio weekly, not by Ads Manager ROAS alone — and change only one variable at a time.
