Google Ads Conversion Tracking
Conversion tracking records what happens after someone clicks your ad — a purchase, a call, a form fill — so you know which ads are actually working.

What it is
Google Ads conversion tracking is a free measurement tool that places a small snippet of code on your website (or uses a phone number swap) to record when a visitor completes an action you care about after clicking your ad.
Each recorded action is called a “conversion.” You define what counts — a purchase confirmation page, a contact form thank-you page, a phone call over 60 seconds — and Google counts every time it happens.
Without it, Google can only tell you who clicked; with it, Google can tell you who actually did something valuable.
Why it matters for your ads
Your ad budget is blind money without conversion tracking. You might be spending 80% of your budget on keywords that get clicks but zero customers, and have no way to know it.
Conversion data also feeds Google’s Smart Bidding algorithms — the more accurate conversion signals you send, the better Google can automatically shift your budget toward the clicks most likely to turn into real business.
Set it up
- Sign in to your Google Ads account at ads.google.com
- Click the Goals icon (flag) in the left navigation, then select 'Conversions' → 'Summary'
- Click the blue '+' button to create a new conversion action
- Choose your conversion type: Website, Phone calls, App, or Import
- For website conversions: name the action (e.g. 'Contact Form Submit'), set a value if known, then click 'Save and continue'
- Install the generated tag: add the global site tag (gtag.js) to every page of your site, then add the event snippet only to your thank-you/confirmation page — or use Google Tag Manager to do this without editing code directly
- Use the 'Tag Assistant' Chrome extension or the 'Test' button in Google Ads to confirm the tag fires when you complete the action yourself
- Wait 24–48 hours, then check the Conversions summary to confirm the status reads 'Recording'
Watch out for
- Placing the event snippet on every page instead of only the confirmation page inflates your conversion count wildly — one snippet goes site-wide, the other goes only on the success/thank-you page.
- If your thank-you page can be refreshed or revisited, each reload can fire a duplicate conversion; set a conversion window and deduplication logic to avoid counting the same sale twice.
- Importing conversions from Google Analytics instead of using a native Google Ads tag often introduces a data lag and can undercount — native tags are more reliable for bidding.
- 'Conversions' and 'All conversions' columns in your dashboard are not the same thing; only actions you mark as 'Primary' feed Smart Bidding, so check that setting for each conversion action.
