Read this first — every recipe, every time

This is a recipe, not a guarantee. How well any ad campaign performs depends on things no recipe can control: your budget, how crowded and expensive your industry's auctions are, the products you sell and what you charge for them, how well your website actually converts visitors, the quality of your customer support, your reviews and reputation, your creative, and plain timing. A perfect recipe on top of a weak offer or a broken website will still lose money — ads amplify what's already there, good or bad.

The budgets shown are suggestions only — yours could and should vary with your available funds and your goals. Follow this recipe with caution: make sure every step lines up with your budget and your business, and edit where necessary. We explain why each step exists, but nothing here is one-size-fits-all. Before you spend a dollar, be blunt with yourself about the list above — get your house in order, then use the recipe to learn and test. That's what it's for.

Check the rules that govern your industry before you run anything. Plenty of businesses carry advertising obligations that have nothing to do with the ad platforms: licensing boards, professional advertising standards, rules about what you may claim and how you must substantiate it, age restrictions, and consent laws covering email, texting, and calling. Those rules are yours to know, they vary by state and country, and they override any step in this recipe.

If you work in a licensed or regulated field — health and medical, legal, financial and lending, insurance, real estate, alcohol, firearms, cannabis, childcare, education, anything with a board or a license behind it — confirm what applies to you before you spend a dollar, and ask your attorney or your licensing body if you are not certain. Nothing on this site is legal advice.

This recipe uses TikTok exclusively, starting with pixel and event tracking, then running a low-cost video reach campaign to seed signal, and graduating to a lead-generation campaign once the algorithm has data to work with. TikTok earns the single-platform call here because bathroom remodeling is a visually driven, before-and-after category — the kind of content TikTok’s feed was built for — and it adds genuine variety to a recent list heavy on Google and Meta.

This recipe is for local or regional bathroom remodeling contractors who have little to no paid ad history, no pixel data, and a modest daily budget. The core problem: most remodelers either skip digital ads entirely or dump money into Google Search before their website can convert anyone. TikTok lets you build brand familiarity and collect leads at a lower cost-per-click than Search, while the visual format does the selling that a plain text ad never could.

What can you afford to pay for a customer?

Advertising can only cost what's left after everything else. Put in what a typical order looks like and this works out the rest.

These are your numbers as you've typed them. Connect your store and we'll work this out from your actual orders instead — including the costs most people forget.

Pixel, Events, and Compliance Foundation

The technical setup

Install the TikTok Pixel via the TikTok Ads Manager Events section. Use the Manual Event Code method or the TikTok Pixel Helper Chrome extension to verify. Fire these standard events in priority order: ViewContent (any page load), SubmitForm (quote/contact form submission), and CompleteRegistration if you use a booking tool. If your site runs on WordPress, use the official TikTok for Business plugin. Confirm events are firing in the Test Events tab before spending a dollar. Add TikTok's URL-based event matching and enable Advanced Matching (hashed email/phone) to improve attribution as your audience grows.

Compliance note: Bathroom remodeling contractors are licensed trades in most U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Verify your state licensing board's rules on advertising claims — some boards restrict terms like "best," "expert," or specific guarantees. Separately, if you collect leads via form or SMS, confirm your consent language and opt-in flow comply with TCPA (U.S.) or CASL (Canada) before running any campaign.

In plain English

Before you spend anything, you need TikTok's tracking pixel on your website so the platform knows who visits and who fills out your quote form. Think of it like installing a security camera — without it, you're flying blind. This phase also covers the legal basics: remodeling is a licensed trade, and some states have rules about what you can claim in ads, so check with your licensing board before you go live.

Organic Content Audit and Creative Brief

The technical setup

Do not skip this phase. TikTok's algorithm rewards content that earns watch time, and paid ads that look like ads perform poorly. Before launching, produce or source at least 3–5 short videos (15–45 seconds each) in these formats:

  • Before/After reveal — start on the old bathroom, cut to the finished result with a satisfying transition. No voiceover needed; music does the work.
  • Process clip — 15-second time-lapse or fast-cut of tile work, vanity install, or shower pan. Shows craftsmanship.
  • Talking-head trust builder — owner or lead contractor on camera for 20–30 seconds: "Here's what most homeowners don't know before starting a bathroom remodel…"

Hook must appear in the first 2 seconds. Caption every video (auto-captions in TikTok's editor). Do not use stock footage — authenticity is the entire point. Results depend heavily on creative quality; the platform settings in later phases are secondary to whether the video stops the scroll.

In plain English

TikTok lives or dies on the video itself — the ad settings are almost irrelevant if the creative is boring. Before you launch a single paid campaign, make at least three short videos: a before-and-after reveal, a quick process clip showing your team's work, and a short piece where someone on camera shares a useful tip. Real jobsite footage beats polished stock video every time on this platform.

New to "funnel" talk? What top, middle, and bottom mean

Think of every person who could ever buy from you as water moving through a funnel. Top of funnel is strangers — people who've never heard of the business. Campaigns here buy attention and first visits, not sales, so expect cheap clicks and few purchases. Middle of funnel is people who've shown interest — they visited, engaged, or are comparing options. Campaigns here re-engage and build the case. Bottom of funnel is people ready to buy right now — searching for exactly what you sell or abandoning a cart. Campaigns here convert; the clicks cost the most because the intent is worth the most. Full funnel means automated campaigns that work every stage at once. One thing that surprises people: recipes usually start at the bottom — capture the demand that already exists before spending money creating new demand at the top.

Reach and Signal-Seeding Campaign

The technical setup

Campaign objective: Reach. This is a deliberate low-cost phase to feed the pixel real audience data before asking TikTok to optimize for leads — a cold account with zero signal will waste money if you jump straight to conversions.

TOP OF FUNNEL
Campaign setup TikTok — Reach campaign

Pure awareness play — introduces the business to local homeowners who have never heard of you, and feeds the pixel enough behavioral data to support conversion optimization in the next phase.

  1. 1. In TikTok Ads Manager, click 'Create' → select objective 'Reach.'
  2. 2. Name the campaign '[City] Bathroom Remodel — Reach Seed' and set a campaign budget cap of $15/day.
  3. 3. At the Ad Group level, set Location to your service area (city or radius — TikTok allows radius targeting down to roughly 10 miles in supported markets).
  4. 4. Set Age to 25–65+. Set Gender to All. Do NOT narrow further — the audience is already small at local scale and you need volume for signal.
  5. 5. Under Interests & Behaviors, add Interest categories: 'Home Improvement,' 'Interior Design,' 'Real Estate.' Keep it broad; you're seeding, not converting.
  6. 6. Placements: select 'TikTok' only (deselect Pangle and other network placements — keep spend on the main feed).
  7. 7. Optimization goal: 'Reach.' Bidding: CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions). Let TikTok set the bid automatically (Lowest Cost).
  8. 8. Upload your best before/after video as the ad creative. Write a caption under 100 characters with a soft CTA: 'See what your bathroom could look like — link in bio.'
  9. 9. Run for 10–14 days without touching the campaign. You need at least 1,000 video views and ideally 50+ profile visits before moving to Phase 4.
In plain English

This first paid campaign isn't about getting leads yet — it's about showing your videos to real homeowners in your area at the lowest possible cost, so TikTok's system learns who actually watches and engages. Think of it as paying a small tuition fee to teach the algorithm about your best customers before you ask it to find more of them.

4

Lead Generation Campaign

The technical setup

Campaign objective: Lead Generation using TikTok's native Instant Form (preferred over website clicks at this budget, because it removes the landing page as a conversion barrier). Only launch this phase after the Reach campaign has delivered at least 1,000 video views and your pixel has logged at least 30–50 ViewContent events.

TikTok ad policy note: Home services ads must not make unsubstantiated superlative claims ("#1 in [City]", "best remodeler") without evidence. Avoid before/after claims that imply guaranteed results. TikTok does not classify bathroom remodeling as a Special Ad Category, so standard targeting is available — but verify this against TikTok's current policy page for your country before launch.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

BOTTOM OF FUNNEL
Campaign setup TikTok — Lead Generation campaign

Targets local homeowners who are in or near a decision window, and removes landing-page friction with a native lead form — capturing contact details directly inside TikTok.

  1. 1. In TikTok Ads Manager, click 'Create' → select objective 'Lead Generation.'
  2. 2. Name the campaign '[City] Bathroom Remodel — Leads' and set a daily budget of $20–$40/day.
  3. 3. At the Ad Group level, set Location to the same service area as Phase 3.
  4. 4. Age: 28–65. You can now test a slight demographic tighten based on what the Reach campaign's audience insights showed.
  5. 5. Under Interests & Behaviors, add: 'Home Improvement,' 'Home Renovation,' 'Interior Design.' Optionally add Hashtag Interactions for #bathroomremodel and #homeremodel if volume allows.
  6. 6. Placements: TikTok feed only.
  7. 7. Optimization goal: 'Lead' (Instant Form submission). Bidding: Lowest Cost. Do not set a manual bid cap until you have 20+ leads and a stable CPL baseline.
  8. 8. Build the Instant Form: Title = 'Get Your Free Bathroom Remodel Quote'; fields = Name, Phone Number, Zip Code, and one custom question ('What's your approximate budget?' with options: Under $10k / $10k–$25k / $25k+). Add your privacy policy URL — required by TikTok for lead forms.
  9. 9. Upload 2–3 video creatives (use your process clip and talking-head video in addition to the before/after). TikTok will auto-optimize delivery toward the best performer.
  10. 10. Set a frequency cap of 3 impressions per user per 7 days to avoid ad fatigue in a small local audience.
In plain English

Now that TikTok knows who watches your videos, you switch to asking for leads directly. Instead of sending people to your website (where many will bounce), you use TikTok's built-in lead form — it pre-fills the user's name and email, so they can request a quote in two taps without leaving the app. Only start this phase once the first campaign has run for at least two weeks and collected real data.

Measurement, Iteration, and Retargeting Unlock

The technical setup

Track these metrics weekly in TikTok Ads Manager and your CRM:

  • Cost Per Lead (CPL) — benchmark for bathroom remodeling is roughly $30–$90 depending on market; above $120 means creative or audience needs a change.
  • Lead-to-appointment rate — track in your CRM or a simple spreadsheet. If CPL looks fine but no one books, the problem is your follow-up speed or offer, not the ads.
  • Video completion rate — aim for 20%+ on the first 6 seconds. Below 15% means the hook isn't working; swap the opening clip.
  • Frequency — if frequency exceeds 4–5 in a 7-day window, your local audience is saturated; expand radius or refresh creative.

Retargeting unlock: TikTok requires a minimum custom audience size of 1,000 users to run a retargeting ad group. At a local scale with a modest budget, you will likely not hit this threshold for 6–10 weeks. Do not create a retargeting campaign before then — it will either not deliver or fragment your budget. Once you cross 1,000 video viewers or website visitors, create a Custom Audience (Video Viewers — watched 50%+) and layer it into a separate ad group within the Lead Generation campaign at a slightly higher daily budget.

Results depend on your offer (free estimate vs. paid consultation), your response time to leads (call within 5 minutes dramatically improves close rate), your reviews, and local competition. The recipe controls the ad settings; it cannot control those variables.

Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.

In plain English

Check your numbers every week, not every day — daily swings are noise. The two numbers that matter most are cost per lead and whether those leads actually book appointments. If leads are cheap but nobody books, the ad isn't the problem — your follow-up or pricing is. Don't bother with retargeting until you have at least 1,000 people who've watched your videos; before that, the audience is too small and you'll just waste money. Once you hit that threshold, you can start showing ads specifically to warm viewers.

The recipe card

  • Start with TikTok pixel and lead-form event tracking before spending anything
  • Run a low-cost Reach campaign for 2 weeks to seed audience signal
  • Launch a Lead Generation campaign with TikTok Instant Forms once data exists
  • Don't attempt retargeting until you have 1,000+ video viewers — it's a later unlock
  • Watch CPL and lead-to-appointment rate weekly; creative quality drives results more than settings
