TikTok for Streetwear
This is a recipe, not a guarantee. How well any ad campaign performs depends on things no recipe can control: your budget, how crowded and expensive your industry's auctions are, the products you sell and what you charge for them, how well your website actually converts visitors, the quality of your customer support, your reviews and reputation, your creative, and plain timing. A perfect recipe on top of a weak offer or a broken website will still lose money — ads amplify what's already there, good or bad.
The budgets shown are suggestions only — yours could and should vary with your available funds and your goals. Follow this recipe with caution: make sure every step lines up with your budget and your business, and edit where necessary. We explain why each step exists, but nothing here is one-size-fits-all. Before you spend a dollar, be blunt with yourself about the list above — get your house in order, then use the recipe to learn and test. That's what it's for.
Check the rules that govern your industry before you run anything. Plenty of businesses carry advertising obligations that have nothing to do with the ad platforms: licensing boards, professional advertising standards, rules about what you may claim and how you must substantiate it, age restrictions, and consent laws covering email, texting, and calling. Those rules are yours to know, they vary by state and country, and they override any step in this recipe.
If you work in a licensed or regulated field — health and medical, legal, financial and lending, insurance, real estate, alcohol, firearms, cannabis, childcare, education, anything with a board or a license behind it — confirm what applies to you before you spend a dollar, and ask your attorney or your licensing body if you are not certain. Nothing on this site is legal advice.
This recipe uses TikTok exclusively, building in three stages: pixel and catalog setup first, low-budget video engagement campaigns to seed signal, then Catalog Sales campaigns once TikTok’s algorithm has real behavioral data to work with. TikTok is the right single platform for streetwear because the audience skews exactly where streetwear lives — 18–34, culture-forward, impulse-driven by visual discovery — and the organic-to-paid feedback loop on TikTok is tighter here than anywhere else right now.
This is for a new or early-stage streetwear brand with a Shopify or similar storefront, little to no paid traffic history, and a modest daily budget. The core problem is cold starts: without conversion history, automated campaigns underspend or spend badly, so this recipe earns the right to automate by building signal cheaply before scaling.
What can you afford to pay for a customer?
Advertising can only cost what's left after everything else. Put in what a typical order looks like and this works out the rest.
These are your numbers as you've typed them. Connect your store and we'll work this out from your actual orders instead — including the costs most people forget.
Pixel, Catalog, and Creative Foundation
TikTok Pixel: Install via the TikTok Ads Manager → Assets → Events → Web Events. Use the Shopify integration (or manual base code) and enable automatic advanced matching. Fire standard events in priority order: ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, CompletePayment. Verify all four events in the TikTok Pixel Helper Chrome extension before running a single dollar.
Product Catalog: In TikTok Ads Manager → Assets → Catalog, connect your Shopify store via the TikTok channel app or upload a product feed manually. Confirm every SKU has a clean image (no text overlays), accurate price, and in-stock status. The catalog is required for Dynamic Showcase Ads later.
Creative bank: Shoot or gather at least 6–8 short-form videos (9–15 seconds each): unboxings, fit-checks, close-up texture/detail shots, lifestyle clips. TikTok's algorithm rewards native-feeling content — no studio-polished ads, no static images as lead creative. Pair each video with 2–3 caption variants for A/B testing.
Before spending a dollar on ads, wire up tracking so TikTok knows who's buying and browsing. Connect your store's product catalog so TikTok can show the right items automatically later. Gather raw, phone-shot video content — outfit reveals, unboxings, texture close-ups — because polished ads get scrolled past on TikTok.
New to "funnel" talk? What top, middle, and bottom mean
Think of every person who could ever buy from you as water moving through a funnel. Top of funnel is strangers — people who've never heard of the business. Campaigns here buy attention and first visits, not sales, so expect cheap clicks and few purchases. Middle of funnel is people who've shown interest — they visited, engaged, or are comparing options. Campaigns here re-engage and build the case. Bottom of funnel is people ready to buy right now — searching for exactly what you sell or abandoning a cart. Campaigns here convert; the clicks cost the most because the intent is worth the most. Full funnel means automated campaigns that work every stage at once. One thing that surprises people: recipes usually start at the bottom — capture the demand that already exists before spending money creating new demand at the top.
Engagement Signal Seeding
Goal: buy cheap behavioral data (video views, profile visits, clicks) so TikTok's algorithm learns who your customer is before you ask it to find buyers. At $15–$20/day this phase isn't meant to generate sales — it's feeding the pixel.
Campaign: Video Views objective. One ad group targeting Broad (no interest stacking) with age 18–34, US/CA/UK or your core geos. Let TikTok optimize natively. Run 3–4 video creatives simultaneously and let the algorithm surface winners over 5–7 days. Do not pause underperformers before day 5 — early CPMs are settlement periods, not signal.
What to watch: 6-second view rate (aim >30%), profile visit rate, and click-through rate. These predict who will convert — not the Video Views campaign itself.
This campaign introduces the brand to cold strangers and generates cheap behavioral data so TikTok learns the audience profile before any purchase-intent spend begins.
- Go to TikTok Ads Manager → Campaigns → Create → select 'Video Views' as the campaign objective.
- Name the campaign clearly (e.g., 'SW — Signal Seeding — Video Views') and set campaign budget to OFF (control at ad group level).
- Create one ad group. Set optimization goal to 'Video Views (6-second)'.
- Set budget to $15–$20/day at the ad group level.
- Targeting: Location = your primary geo(s). Age = 18–34. Gender = All. Interests & Behaviors = leave blank (Broad targeting) — do not stack interests at this stage.
- Placement: TikTok only (uncheck Pangle and Global App Bundle).
- Upload 3–4 native video creatives (9–15 sec, no heavy branding overlays). Write 2–3 caption variants per video.
- Set schedule to run continuously starting today.
- Review and publish. Do not touch optimization settings or pause creatives for the first 5 days — let the algorithm settle.
Spend a small amount to get videos in front of real people and see who watches, clicks, or visits your profile. This isn't about sales yet — it's teaching TikTok's system what your audience looks like so the later, more expensive campaigns don't waste money guessing.
Website Traffic Warmup
Once the Video Views campaign has run 7–10 days and your pixel has logged 50–100 ViewContent events, shift budget toward click-based traffic to build a retargetable pool and push more ViewContent/AddToCart events. You need roughly 500 pixel events before Catalog Sales campaigns can optimize intelligently.
Campaign: Traffic objective, optimized for Landing Page Views (not just Clicks — LPV filters bot traffic). One ad group, same broad age/geo targeting. Budget $15–$20/day. Reuse the top 2 video creatives from the Views phase, plus 1–2 new creatives. Monitor AddToCart events in Events Manager daily — that number is your green light for the next phase.
Honest tradeoff: At $15–$20/day you may only accumulate enough AddToCart events for the next phase in 3–5 weeks. Rushing to Catalog Sales before that threshold means higher CPAs and wasted spend. Patience here pays.
Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.
Drives cold-audience traffic to the storefront to build ViewContent and AddToCart signal — the minimum data the Catalog Sales algorithm needs to optimize toward buyers.
- In TikTok Ads Manager → Campaigns → Create → select 'Traffic' as the campaign objective.
- Name it 'SW — Traffic Warmup — LPV'.
- Set campaign budget to OFF; control at ad group level.
- Create one ad group. Set optimization goal to 'Landing Page Views'.
- Budget: $15–$20/day.
- Targeting: same geo and age (18–34) as Phase 2. Keep interests broad — do not narrow yet.
- Placement: TikTok feed only.
- Upload top 2 creatives from the Views phase plus 1–2 new videos. Aim for variety: one fit-check, one unboxing or detail shot.
- Enable 'Automated Creative Optimization' only if you have 4+ distinct creatives; otherwise leave off.
- Monitor Events Manager daily. Move to the Catalog Sales phase when AddToCart events reach 50+ over a 7-day window.
Now that TikTok has seen some audience behavior, run a campaign that drives actual clicks to your store. This builds a pool of site visitors and keeps stacking pixel data (people viewing products, adding to cart) until there's enough history for TikTok to find buyers automatically.
Catalog Sales — Automated Full-Funnel
With 50+ AddToCart events in a 7-day window (ideally 10–20 purchases if your price point allows), launch a Catalog Sales campaign and let TikTok's algorithm work across the full funnel — prospecting new users, re-engaging past visitors, and closing warm signals simultaneously.
Campaign type: Catalog Sales. Product set: All products (or your top-margin collection if catalog is large). Optimization event: CompletePayment if you have 20+ purchase events in 7 days; otherwise AddToCart until you hit that threshold.
Ad group targeting: Start with Broad — no interest filters. TikTok's catalog algorithm performs better with room to explore. Budget $25–$35/day. Enable Dynamic Showcase Ads (TikTok auto-generates product video ads from your catalog).
Do not run a separate retargeting campaign. At this budget, split audiences fragment spend below meaningful delivery. TikTok's Catalog Sales campaign already re-engages past visitors via its internal value-based optimization. Dedicated retargeting becomes worth testing at $80+/day total with 1,000+ weekly site visitors.
Honest caveat: Catalog Sales performance is heavily influenced by your product pricing vs. competitors, your landing page speed, and your review count. The algorithm can find the right people — it cannot fix a weak offer or a slow mobile checkout.
Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.
Catalog Sales spans all funnel stages automatically — prospecting cold audiences, re-engaging product viewers, and closing high-intent visitors — using TikTok's behavioral data to allocate spend dynamically.
- In TikTok Ads Manager → Campaigns → Create → select 'Catalog Sales' as the campaign objective.
- Name it 'SW — Catalog Sales — Auto'.
- Link your product catalog. Select product set: All Products (or a curated top-sellers set).
- Set campaign daily budget to $25–$35/day.
- Create one ad group. Optimization event: 'CompletePayment' if 20+ purchases in last 7 days; otherwise 'AddToCart'.
- Targeting: Broad (no interest or behavior filters). Age 18–34. Your primary geos.
- Enable Dynamic Showcase Ads — TikTok will auto-generate video and image ads from catalog data.
- Upload 2–3 manual video creatives as well, so the system can mix dynamic and human-made assets.
- Placement: TikTok feed only.
- Set a 7-day attribution window (click) and review performance weekly — do not optimize or change bids more than once per week.
Now TikTok has enough data to run on autopilot. This campaign automatically shows the right products to the right people — people who've visited your site, similar people who haven't, and everyone in between. Think of it as handing the wheel to TikTok's AI after you've taught it who your customer is. Results here depend as much on your prices and checkout experience as on ad settings.
Measurement Discipline and Scaling Rules
Primary KPIs (in priority order):
- MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio): Total revenue ÷ total ad spend. Track weekly in a spreadsheet, not just in TikTok's dashboard. TikTok over-attributes on view-through. MER tells you if the business is growing.
- ROAS (reported in Ads Manager): Useful for relative creative comparison, not absolute truth. Use 7-day click attribution only — view-through attribution inflates numbers.
- Cost per AddToCart / Cost per Purchase: Watch trends week-over-week, not day-over-day.
Scaling rules: Increase budget no more than 20% every 5–7 days on a winning ad group. Larger jumps reset the learning phase. A campaign re-enters learning whenever you change budget >20%, swap creative, or edit targeting.
Creative refresh signal: When CTR drops more than 30% from its first-week baseline on any creative, replace it. Streetwear audiences exhaust creative fast — plan new videos every 3–4 weeks.
Retargeting unlock: Once you're consistently hitting 1,000+ weekly unique site visitors and $80+/day in total spend, add a separate Video Shopping Ads retargeting ad group targeting website visitors (30-day window) at $15–$20/day incremental budget.
Reminder: budget figures are suggestions — scale to your funds and goals.
Ad platforms will tell you results are great even when they aren't — because they count their own credits generously. Track total revenue versus total ad spend yourself in a spreadsheet every week. Only raise budgets slowly (20% at a time), swap in fresh video every few weeks before it gets stale, and don't add a dedicated retargeting campaign until you have real site traffic to retarget.
The recipe card
- Before anything else: confirm the advertising rules for your own industry and location — licensing board requirements, professional advertising standards, what you may claim, age restrictions, and consent rules for email, texting, and calling. They override every step below.
- Install TikTok pixel + product catalog before spending anything
- Run cheap Video Views ads first to teach TikTok who your customer is
- Shift to Landing Page Views traffic to stack AddToCart events
- Unlock Catalog Sales automation once 50+ AddToCart events exist in 7 days
- Measure via Marketing Efficiency Ratio weekly — don't trust platform ROAS alone
